Study of the Chinese Family specimen
I can’t believe I’m going to say this but I survived a buffet with Loretta’s extended family. Mind you that includes 9 uncles and aunties and their kids as well! But some of them were’nt there so whew~! Once more, observations I’ve made about the Chinese specimen. Her family typifies what a Chinese family is.
Rich, Talks about everything and eats untidily.
Now, these are merely general observations I’ve made…
1. Obviously, business IS personal. It’s even being brought to the table. Talk about the economy, shares and whatever and we had a freelance financial consultant at our table. I sat beside L’s oldest cousin’s boyfriend Carl who well does that for a living and he was very well informed. From where else could you get better infromation about the economy?
2. At the age of 26/27, you develop an aunty laugh.
3. Modesty is something very important to all aunties. Case in point was L’s dress which was rather revealing because it was loose. One aunty called her to the other table just to ask her to adjust it. And another aunty even gave her hollywood tape to secure the dress.
4. Both Chinese family kids and Malay family kids are the same. They like to run around around around and never seem to get tired.
5. Chinese families generally drink tea at the buffet itself. What my family does, is that we head down to SImpang or some other lepakz area to drink tea. Mr Lawyer uncle, L’s mum and me drank coffee though!
6. Chinese kids are SO much more willing to do your bidding than malay kids. Well, at least the ones in my family.
7. A buffet requires maximization of the time that the buffet lasts. Meaning, we actually spent 4 hours sitting down talking and eating.
The last time I went to the same place, we were in and out of the place in around 1.5 – 2 hours.
Maybe that was the reason why I felt so full!
8. They eat a very wide range of food. For my family, we were always rather limited to whatever we ate at buffets because we generally stuck to rice and whatever food that could go with it. The family ate steak, laksa, oyster, snail, prata and a lot of other things. End result: Messy table!
